Dorothée de Monfreid lives and works in Paris.


She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. She works with WORDS just as keenly as with IMAGES.
 She has written and/or illustrated over 60 books (published at l’école des loisirs, Misma, Le Seuil, Gallimard, Hélium, Casterman and Bayard), which have been widely translated. Her commitment to comics has led to her chairing the Youth Jury of the Angoulême Festival in 2020. Dorothée de Monfreid’s versatile stories and prolific drawings express a burlesque and unbridled imagination; she offers a characteristically joyful and sharp perspective on our daily lives.

She has published extensively in CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. Her young reader series Les Toutous, (The Doggies) stages the everyday life of a pack of dogs and was published at l’école des loisirs (15 volumes to this day). There are numerous other albums and a few novels. Between 2005 and 2022, she has released a monthly illustration for the section entitled Les Petits Philosophes (The Small Philosophers) in Pomme d’Api (Bayard Presse). The series was published as hardback volumes in the BD Kids collection starting from September 2020 (there are 5 volumes available now). An animated version of the adventures of Les Toutous is also online. The first tome of her new graphic novel series, Mari Moto, was released at Le Seuil in April 2021 and a second volume was released in 2022.

Dorothée has also written COMIC BOOKS. Les Choses de l’amour, a cartoon series in black and white (Misma editions, 2020), is for adult readers and gathered her contributions to the newspaper Mon Lapin Quotidien (L’Association). The comic strips of Ada & Rosie, mauvais esprit de famille, originally designed as blog posts for the national newspaper Libération between 2017 and 2019, were published as a hardback volume with Casterman (2019). She has collaborated with L’atelier Mastodonte for Spirou (Dupuis) and is a founding member of the comic book magazine Capsule Cosmique (Milan Presse, 2004-2006). In 2022, she took part in the collective project of Carnets de Campagne in which 6 authors (including the project initiator, Mathieu Sapin) followed and drew the French presidential campaign.
